Biography

Dr. de Schweinitz practices family medicine and public health for the Tanana Chiefs Conference of Alaska. His primary interests lie at the intersection of physical, social, and psychological health. In his teaching career, he has focused on working with a variety of health professionals (medical students, graduate students in public health, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners) to understand how multiple dimensions of life (social, psychological, and physical) combine to create health and disease. His current research focuses on explaining wellness, resiliency, and suicide in rural, Athabascan communities in Alaska's interior, and how wellness teams can impact a community. In addition, he is involved in research into childhood obesity with an emphasis on prenatal and early childhood factors that cause obesity. He enjoys writing stories and essays about health and healing and has enjoyed past work as a facilitator in the Healer's Art.
