Research Summary

Dr. Metz studies the psychosocial and motivational factors that help students succeed in school and develop vocationally. Recent work has focused on student veterans, college student athletes, and women and students of color majoring in STEM. Dr. Metz is co-author of a student success textbook, Connections, and a self-assessment tool, the Academic and Career Excellence System (ACES).

Biography


Dr. Metz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Utah and serves as Associate Chair of the Department and Director of the School Counseling Program.  She earned a M.Ed. in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling in 1997 and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology in 2005 from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.  Her research examining motivational and psychosocial factors related to academic and career success in underrepresented and underserved student populations has led to numerous journal articles, book chapters, conference presentations, workshops, and faculty in-service trainings.

Dr. Metz has extensive teaching, counseling, and career advising experience in high schools, community colleges, and four-year public and private institutions of higher education.  She is passionate about mentoring students and received two University of Utah teaching awards.  She is engaged in service to promote access and equity in education and serves on a number of state-level advisory boards and task forces to create institutional change as well.
