Biography

Dr. Schulze is a David Eccles Professor  at the the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado in 1994. Prior to joining the faculty at Utah he was an associate professor of entrepreneurship and the HR Horvitz Chair of Family Business at Case Western Reserve University, and an assistant professor of management at the University of Connecticut. He has published in a variety of journals, including The Harvard Business Review, Strategic Management Journal, The Academy of Management Journal, The Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, Long Range Planning, Managerial and Decision Economics, and The Journal of Business Venturing. In addition, his work has appeared in several books and the proceedings of numerous conferences, including the Best Paper Proceedings of the Academy of Management in 1992, 1999 and 2000. He serves on the editorial review board for a variety of top tier journals, and is an associate editor of Academy of Managment Perspectives. His research interests focus on the governance of private and closely held firms, the nature of risk, and a variety of topics related to new venture formation and growth. Prof Schulze has also been an innovator in entrepreneurship education. He had a leading role in the development of an MBA concentration in the Biosciences at the Weatherhead School of Management (the third such program in the nation at the time) and the Science Entrepreneurship program at Case Western Reserve University, and the creation of the nationally-ranked graduate and entrepreneurship programs at the University of Utah, as well as the Foundry, its award-winning business accelerator program. Prior to pursuing a career as an academic, Prof. Schulze was co-founder and vice-president of Small Byte Systems, a PC-based accounting software firm and spent six years in strategic planning and business development for Kaiser Permanente.
