Courses I Teach

  • NURS 6004 - Introduction to Information and IT
    Introductory graduate course in information management focusing on the theoretical basis of information and technology with an emphasis on the management and processing of clinical data, information, and knowledge. The emphasis of this course is on the use of information and technology in health care and nursing practice. Structured data and processes are addressed. Information technologies used in nursing practice are explored. Issues that impact clinical practice and administrative decisions are investigated.
  • NURS 6803 - Clinical Database Design
    Development and maintenance of clinical databases and application in solving clinical problems. Design methods, database structures, indexing, data dictionaries, retrieval languages, and data security are presented.
  • NURS 6804 - Successful Implementation of Systems
    This course addresses the planning, implementation and outcomes of the implementation of information systems in health care settings. Concepts related to the whole systems life cycle are applied. National trends in the US are analyzed. Project management techniques including risk mitigation, training, and organizational politics, will be woven throughout the course. Electronic Health Record architecture, IT processes, and major implementation issues are defined, evaluated and applied. Approaches for maintaining health information systems and evaluating the outcomes of such systems are analyzed.
  • NURS 6806 - Computer Science Fundamentals for Clinicians
    Introductory survey of computer science concepts, intended for students with a clinical background without prior programming experience. The course introduces basic vocabulary, fundamental computer science concepts, and an introduction to programming principles. Students are exposed to programming environments through hands on assignments.
  • NURS 7104 - Applied Informatics for Health Sciences Research
    This course addresses foundational concepts in information technology and informatics, important for the conduct of health sciences research. The course builds upon basic prerequisite information technology skills, and emphasizes applied informatics concepts as they relate to study design, development, and execution.
