Research Statement

My research interests relate to leveraging data for improved efficiency, communication, and decision making in health care. I developed a model for bidirectional electronic communication and information sharing across organizational boundaries using existing health information exchange technology. Currently, I'm studying the outcomes of implementing this model to support communication and collaboration between emergency departments and poison control centers for treatment of poison exposed patients. My work reflects an interdisciplinary approach to studying problems in informatics and I collaborate extensively with colleagues at the Utah Poison Control Center. Poison control centers are playing a critical role in the current epidemic of opioid overdoses. One of my studies related to health information exchange between emergency departments and poison control centers was featured in a 2014 AHRQ video found here

In recent years, I've become increasingly engaged in clinical research informatics. I serve as a biomedical informatics lead for the University of Utah Center for Clinical and Translational Science (NCATS UL1TR001067). As a co-investigator for the Utah PRISMS Center (NIBIB U54EB021973), I'm contributing to the development of a research informatics platform that enables the integration of air quality sensors into studies of pediatric asthma. I also have expertise in applying methods of data science as an approach to leverage "big data" for decision making and insight in heatlhcare, and previously used these methods to develop predictive models in conjunction with two Department of Veterans Affairs funded studies.

Engaged in both clinical informatics and applied analytics, I'm keenly interested in the Institute of Medicine's learning health system vision. My long-term goal is to innovate information management for poisoning toward a learning health system model that brings together population health, individual patient care, and scientific discovery.
