Biography

          Prof. Zhaoxia Pu is a professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Utah, and a member of the NOAA Science Advisory Board. She is a fellow of the American Meteorological Society and a fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society.

             Prof. Pu's research is devoted to improving the prediction of high-impact weather and extremes. Her areas of interest include numerical weather prediction, data assimilation, numerical modeling, and predictability. In recent years, her research has covered topics on satellite and radar data assimilation, mesoscale severe weather systems, earth system modeling, and coupled land-atmosphere data assimilation, observing system simulation experiments, targeting weather observations, atmospheric boundary layers over complex terrain, and applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in NWP and climate forecasting.

           Prof. Pu has extensive experience collaborating with NOAA, NASA, DOE, ONR, NSF, and the university community, and has carried out over 30 research projects with over $10 million research grants as a PI. She has published over 120 peer-reviewed journal articles. In recent years, she has been deeply involved in NOAA’s Hurricane Forecasting Improvement Program, Next-Generation Global Prediction System (NGGPS), and Unified Forecasting System (UFS) programs. Her research projects have also included substantial components in research to operational transition.  Pu has been a science team member and working group leader for NASA satellite missions and recent field campaigns. She leads the current NSF-funded field campaign and research project of "Cold fog amongst complex terrain (CFACT)." 

       Prof. Pu has served as a member of numerous national and international science teams, advisory boards, review panels, and editorial boards.  She is an editor of the AMS journal "Weather and Forecasting."

        Prof. Pu teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses. She has supervised  to graduate many M.S. and Ph.D. students. She won an outstanding faculty teaching award from the College of Mines and Earth Sciences previously.
