• SUST 6000 - Global Change and Society
  This is a unique course that allows students the opportunity to develop an interdisciplinary perspective exploring complex systems of environmental change and the connection to society through a collaborative project-based approach. The outcome of this experiential course is determined by students. We urge students to be open-minded, creative, analytical, and to push the boundaries of their expertise while embracing new ideas and disciplines. SPRING 2022 COURSE THEME: every year this course has a theme centered around a complex environmental issue. This year (2024), that theme is Climate Resilience. According to the U's Climate Resilience Assessment, climate change is a threat multiplier, worsening existing problems for people and the environment, including inequities that exist in our society and systems. This assessment defines resilience as "the ability to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to hazardous events, trends, or disturbances related to climate." There are community groups, legislation efforts, and researchers actively working on climate resilience, yet there is so much more that could be done. How might you approach this problem? How might you identify a point to engage and intervene with around climate resilience? What expertise, experience, or knowledge might you bring to the table to start talking about this issue? We will explore this topic through readings, guest researchers, and community members, then collaboratively define and implement semester projects to positively contribute to this important issue.
