Research Statement

Social psychology has long been interested in the social world and environment, but has been studied with asocial tools. While this led to a prolific and dramatic stride forward in the last century, these asocial approaches are beginning to constrain how we think about phenomena taking the social right out of theory. My interest is in recapturing the social aspect of social psychology through dynamical systems theory.

I tend to describe systems theory as a series of principles and tools for studying change occurring both in time and across interactions. It is a theory of how to use mathematics as a descriptive language for change. This approach maps onto the social reality that we have been struggling with since Lewin originated much of the methods we use today. Ironically, Lewin's theory is a systems theory, itself.

My current focus has been on developing tools for studying regulation. Systems theory originated in mathematics and physics where much of the methodology and statistics are built around being able to measure a widget thousands of times and doing so for many widgets. This is just not true in psychology, thus the tools do not simply translate over.

I maintain several projects that range from straight quantitative projects to applying these ideas in the study of eating disorders, and diabetes management.
