Geographical Regions of Interest

  • China
In September of 2019, the University of Utah Philharmonia orchestra hosted the first part of an exchange with student musicians from Wuhan University. in 2018, I presented a master class/rehearsal at Wuhan Conservatory of Music and conducted a concert at Wuhan University. I received an honorary appointment as adjunct professor of music at Wuhan University on January 2, 2019. I had planned to return during a sabbatical in the spring of 2021 to Wuhan, and also had scheduled concerts in with the Changsha Symphony and Harbin Symphony. These were canceled due the pandemic. Previously, I conducted a concert of the Hunan Symphony in 2017.
  • Denmark
I presented at the Conductors Guild International Conference held in Copenhagen in 2013.
  • Finland
I was slated to conduct Mozart's Requiem with musicians from the Kuopio Academy of Music and professional soloists during March 20 and 22 of 2020. This was postponed due to the pandemic. It is hoped this may occur in 2022. I will plan to observe classes at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Previously, I conducted a concert at the Kuopio Academy of Music in 2008. The professor from Kuopio came to Utah for a reciprocal concert with our students in 2008.
  • Germany
I have conducted and performed at the Eutin Festspiele in July of 2011. Our students formed the core of the string section during that entire festival as guest artists in 2011.
  • Northern America
I am interested in performing and editing music of the Second New England School of composers for performances and lectures. I am also committed to premiering works by American composers, including works by historically underrepresented composer groups.
  • Northern Europe
  • Portugal
In 2022, the Utah Phil hosted and premiered a work by internationally recognized Portuguese composer, Luis Tinoco and saxophonist Joáo Pedro Silva. Planned exchanges will further engage with these connections.
  • Republic of Korea
I conducted a concert and adjudicated a concerto competition at the Busan International Music Festival in September of 2017. I was scheduled to return in 2021, but this has been postponed due to the pandemic.
  • South America
I have served on the IBERMUSICAS Committee for the College Orchestra Directors Association. The committee is charged with networking with conductors in Latin America and facilitating exchanges.
  • Spain
I will be attending a conducting conference in Spain as part of my Sabbatical plans. My hope is to engage with orchestras and composers from this region (Valencia).
  • United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
I took the University of Utah Chamber Orchestra on a performance tour of London in May, 2012.
  • Western Asia
I conducted a concert of music by living composers from Syria, Iran, and Palestine as well as performing banned songs from Iran with singer Monika Jalili and her ensemble on December 6, 2018. This was in partnership and co-sponsored by the Center for Middle-Eastern Studies at the University of Utah, and also partially funded by a University Teaching Grant. The composers skyped in for rehearsals and were at the concert virtually via web link. This is the second time I have collaborated with Ms. Jalili, an internationally renown singer of Iranian songs. A future project is being planned.
  • Western Europe
In 2006, the Utah Philharmonia toured Bavaria and Austria as part of the Mozart 250th Anniversary Celebration.
