Biography

Dave Norwood is a respected and accomplished IT leader. He is the Technologist in Residence (TIR) and Assistant Professor at the University of Utah. In his role as the TIR, Dave guides Masters of Information Systems students through the sponsored capstone project program. Students gain hands-on experience working on real IT projects in industry. Under Dave's guidance, students have completed over 150 complex IT projects for 60 organizations around Utah and the country. As a professor he has taught over 650 undergraduate and 1,600 graduate IS students, sharing his decades of experience with the next generation of IT professionals. Dave is giving back to, and having a long-term impact on, the IT industry.

Before becoming an educator, Dave launched Trusted Network Solutions in 2005 soon after graduating with an MBA from the University of Utah with a dual focus in Entrepreneurship and Information Systems. His vision was to provide high-end computer network equipment and services to businesses. Dave's business and management experience, along with his strong technical background, helped TNS evolve into a leading network infrastructure and security value-added reseller and MSSP. TNS grew into a thriving business that generated $60 million in sales and employed dozens of professionals. TNS was acquired by VLCM in October 2020.

In 2012 Dave co-founded Stratus IT Group to focus on managed and cloud based IT services. Stratus was spun off as an independent company in 2015 and later acquired by a national MSP.

Dave cut his teeth as a business leader in the early 90s as a manager and buyer for the largest grocery store in Wisconsin. He left his successful retail career in 1996 to move into the technology industry, joining the Networking Team of Northwestern Mutual, a Fortune 500 company. While working as a systems engineer, Dave earned multiple technical certifications, including MCSE, CNE, CCNA and JNCIA. After five years with Northwestern Mutual, he moved to Salt Lake City and joined a start-up venture as a technical account executive.

A 1996 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (with a bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems), Dave is a native of Brainerd, Minnesota. Today he lives in Holladay, Utah with his wife Maureen and children Jackson and Sydney.
