Biography

Born in Akron, Ohio, Timberlake attended public schools, graduating from Firestone High School.  He enrolled in Miami University (Ohio), attending for several years while majoring in English.  Before graduating, he took a "sabatical" and with his first wife at that time joined Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), working on a number of poverty program projects in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.  After a year in VISTA he enrolled at the University of Denver, graduating with a B.S. degree in Sociology.  From there he attended graduate school at Brown University, earning the M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology.  He engaged in further training in sociology in the Department of Social Relations at The Johns Hopkins University.  He has been on the faculties of sociology programs at three universities.  Preceeding the University of Utah he worked at Kansas State University and the University of Memphis.  He served as department chair (or head) for 15 years total at K-State and the U.  He has also held visiting research appointments at the University of Glasgow and Universiteit Gent (Belgium).
