Research Statement

My research focus has been understanding basic aspects of neuromuscular function during dynamic contractions. I have used a cycling model and thus my work has application in basic science and in cycling exercise in a broad range of settings. I have recently branched out into treatment and prevention of diabetes. In a recently study we found that six workouts with single leg cycling dramatically increased proteins associated with glucose uptake, insulin sensitivity, and respiratory capacity. The next step is to determine if similar gains can be realized in a diabetic population and if those gains will reduce complications of diabetes. Finally, I am interested in facilitating low intensity exercise in work place and classroom settings and developed prototypes of an ActiveDesk with integrated workstation and exercise bike.
