Other Profile Data

SERVICE  - I’m placing my Service in four areas: a) coordinating residencies, workshops and conferences, b) community partnerships, c) service to the department, college and university d) professional service outside the University.

a) One of my passions in terms of Service has been to bring together influential artists, teachers and professionals to the department for residencies and intensive workshops.  Accomplishments: Several years ago, I sought grant assistance for these projects and was successful receiving funds for many events (see CV).  Since receiving tenure, I received a Council of Dee Fellows Grant in 2007 to bring Victoria Marks to do a project involving PDC with recently returned Iraqi war veterans.  I have also co-coordinated SaltDanceFest 2011 and 2012, bringing nationally and internationally renowned artists to Salt Lake City for summer intensive workshops. Goals: I would like to continue developing projects such as these and writing grants for support.

b) I’ve enjoyed the community partnerships with which I’ve been involved.  Accomplishments: I’ve coordinated several of these partnerships, mostly involving Performing Dance Company (PDC).  (For eleven years up until 2011, I served as Co-Director for PDC.)  Under my leadership, PDC has visited West High School, Judge Memorial High School, Woods Cross High School, East High School, the Sorensen Community Center and other locations.  I have coordinated and hosted several PDC-related lecture demonstrations and/or interactive workshops for the Sorensen’s After-School Program, the LEAP program and Project Youth Program.  As a part of the Teaching Methods classes in our department, students teach at local, public schools.  Goals: As appropriate to the courses I teach at UU, I will continue to foster community partnerships.  As stated in my Creative Research section, I am interested in doing more community-based collaborative projects, specifically targeting special needs populations and their families.  I have begun making connections and am excited to develop this project, one that I see having several different manifestations.

c) I feel as though I’ve continued to be a responsible, contributing faculty member in terms of departmental, college and university service.  My service load has increased year-by-year.  Accomplishments:  My departmental responsibilities currently include: Director of Undergraduate Studies (2012-present), freshman advisor (2011-2012), sophomore advisor (fall 2010-spring 2011 & spring 2012), transfer advisor (fall 2010-spring 2011 & spring 2012), dance minor advisor (spring 2012), chair of the search committee for the Assistant Professor/Lecturer position  (2011-2012), departmental RPT committee (2007-2012), summer workshop (SaltDanceFest) planning committee (2010-2012), choreographic advisor for various students in the department (for senior concert, student concert and graduate concert each year), service on graduate thesis committees (12 since 2007, chairing 5 of them), member of pre-thesis committees (usually 1 each year), faculty mentor for one first-year graduate student and one second-year graduate student (fall 2011-present, a small service), technique placement committee (a small service, every year) and in the 2011/2012 academic year, I assisted Abby Fiat with her responsibilities as Director of Undergraduate Studies.  As with my colleagues in the department, I attend auditions and follow-up meetings for prospective undergraduate and graduate students.  For some of our departmental classes we teach, we do additional one-on-one advising with students.  This is true for all of our technique classes and I teach (and advise) in this portion of the curriculum every semester, advising between 20-30 students depending on class size each semester.  Up until the present academic year, I co-directed the department’s Performing Dance Company (2000-2010 although this was considered part of my teaching load).  I was the Senior Advisor (2000-2010) and on the Guest Artist Task Force (2004-2010).  Since receiving tenure, I have served on the following College Committees: College of Fine Arts RPT Committee (2007-2008 & 2009-present), Arts Education Committee (2009-present), College of Fine Arts Strategic Planning Committee for Goal #6 (2012), College of Fine Arts Area Committee (2004-2007), lead instructor for College of Fine Arts Dean’s Tours (between 2001-2011) and the following University committees: University Studies Committee (2010-present and previously from 2003-2006) and the Council of Dee Fellows (2008-2011).

d) Outside the University, my passion for the science/art blend has jump-started me to be involved with several professional organizations.  Accomplishments: I co-founded the Dance Kinesiology Teachers’ Group in 2003, now an international networking group, serving as chair from 2005-2006.  For this organization, I’ve coordinated several workshops, conferences and meetings at locations including: Washington, DC (2011), West Palm Beach, FL (2006), Stockholm, Sweden (2005), and Salt Lake City, UT (2003).  I have also been an active member of the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science (IADMS) from 2000-present, serving on the Education Committee from 2002-2009 and belonged to the Performing Arts Medicine Association from 2001-2007.  Goals: Planning is underway for upcoming Dance Kinesiology Teachers’ Group gatherings and online resource sharing.  Currently (2013), I am co-coordinating a mini-conference for the Dance Kinesiology Group to be held at the University of Utah in summer 2013.
