Courses I Teach

  • BMI 6120 / NURS 6120 - Standards in Biomedical Informatics
This is a hybrid course that I co-teach teach faculty from Biomedical Informatics. The course introduces informatics students, clinicians, and public health practitioners to fundamental principles about terminologies and standards and their importance for the exchange and meaningful use of health information. Use of standards is critical for interoperability and are required for the meaningful use of data, both for their primary use (e.g. in the clinical setting) as well as their secondary use for quality monitoring, public health reporting, decision support, and research and analysis. It is important for persons involved in the design, development, and use of systems to understand the role, use and benefits of standards for terminology, messaging, and information modeling. This course provides foundational knowledge and introduces students to the skills, resources, and concepts that will allow them to work in this evolving field.
  • BMI 6300 / NURS 6300 - Clinical Decision Support
This is a hybrid course that I co-teach teach faculty from Biomedical Informatics. The course has the following objectives: By the end of this course, you will be able to: a) Describe different kinds of CDS tools and their relevance to clinical problems; b) Apply current CDS architectures, standards and tools such as SMART on FHIR, CDS Hooks, HL7 Infobutton Standard, OpenInfobutton, and OpenCDS; c) Develop a CDS tool following best CDS design practices; and d) Describe the challenges with effective CDS implementation and adoption, including potential pitfalls such as alert fatigue. - Plan the implementation and evaluation strategy for a CDS intervention.
  • NURS 6805 - Seminar in Clinical Informatics
This hybrid course is designed for new Masters-level Nursing Informatics students and builds upon NURS 6702 Foundations of Health Informatics. This course focuses on issues of roles and collaboration for the informatics nurse specialist, and is designed to support transition to professional practice. The course modules are: a) Nursing Informatics as a Specialty; b) Interdisciplinary practice of Nursing Infomatics; c) Career development; and d) Current topics and future trends.
  • Population and Public Health Informatics - BMI 6700
Developed and taught for 10 years (2007-17). The goal is to introduce informatics and public health students/practitioners to informatics principles and their application to public health problems.
