Teaching Philosophy

As a lifelong learner myself, my goal as a teacher is  to be a mentor, a guide and a muse.  It is my goal to inspire a love of learning,  challenge a student’s assumptions,  and provoke curiosity.  Of all the aspects of my job,  classroom teaching is the most rewarding and I consider it a privilege to share my clinical expertise with students.  My classes include fundamental information for midwives and nurse practitioners. I continually strive to improve my courses in response to student feedback to enhance the learning experience.  I am quick to add technological enhancements while maintaining a solid foundation in scientific inquiry.

  • NURS 7611 - Women's Health Nurse Practitioner Practicum I
The first in a series, this course introduces nurse midwifery and women’s health nurse practitioner students to the philosophy and role of the independent practitioner in the ambulatory setting. Students apply didactic knowledge and clinical skills in the provision of women’s health care throughout the life span, with an emphasis on normal findings, and routine management of normal pregnancy and well woman gynecologic care. Students will practice techniques of assessment, beginning awareness of management approaches. Students work under the close supervision of faculty preceptors. This is a Credit / No Credit course.
  • NURS 7827 - Women's Health Nurse Practitioner Practicum VI
The final in a series, women’s health nurse practitioner students in this course build on the skills and knowledge gained in didactic courses and Practicums I-IV. Students transition to a safe beginning practitioner. This clinical experience is at sites that best match the students’ learning needs. Faculty determine the site in collaboration with the students. Students are expected to apply previous didactic and clinical knowledge and experience in the care of women throughout the life span. During this clinical experience students function semi-autonomously under the supervision of a preceptors. Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner students will register for 4 credit hours. Students who are completing both the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner major and the Nurse Midwifery major will determine the number of credit hours needed in consultation with the Specialty Director. This is a Credit / No Credit course.
