Biography

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Jack Buchanan is currently an adjunct professor teaching in the Design Program in the School of Architecture + Planning School at the University of Utah. He has done consulting and investment management for major corporations and government agencies in the United States, China and Europe in areas of business strategy, technology evaluation, product development, operations management, business planning, corporate development, corporate valuation, energy and environmental management, marketing and financial managementHe has also served as a senior officer or Board Member in major corporations, in the U.S. Government and on university faculties.

During the past six years in China, he has served Chinese Government State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), Hewlett Packard, where he served as a Chief Technology Officer for HP China, Microsoft, and other U.S. and China-based companies. He has worked on the many applications focusing on both the underlying science and engineering as well as commercial business development.  

He provided consulting in business development for Chinese investment companies, Science and Industrial Parks (ZhongGuanCun), business incubators, startup businesses, and for other global companies operating in China. In academia, he gave university lectures, judged business plan competitions at Beijing University and CEIBS, provided executive training for Chairmen and CEOs of major China State-Owned Enterprises, and earlier consulted for the Central Government on the development of the computer industry in China.

He was formerly a Professor at Harvard Business School.  Earlier he served as a Professor at Carnegie Mellon University in the Department of Computer Science and the Graduate School of Industrial Administration, and later as a Visiting Professor at Harvard Law School focusing on technology and the law.

Dr. Buchanan served as Director of Information Systems (CIO) for the United States Courts (JS-17) with nation-wide responsibilities for operations management of systems development, data centers & network operations and management support for the Federal Court System. He also served as Chief Strategic Officer, Chief Information Officer and member of the Executive Committee for the CUNA Mutual Insurance Group, where he was responsible for strategic development, M&A integration, and management of all IT related activities for the corporation and its subsidiaries in over sixty countries.

He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in Computer Science, having previously received his BS and MS degrees in applied mathematics from the University of Utah.  He also graduated from the Stanford Graduate School of Business Senior Executive Program.                                                           

Mr. Buchanan has consulted for: Zhongguancun Science Parks, Hewlett Packard (China), Beijing SASAC (State Owned Enterprises State Supervisory Agency), Beijing University, China NGO Advisory Groups, IBM Corporation (ten divisions in the U.S. and Europe), Eastman Kodak, the Peoples Republic of China (Central Government), Guangcai 49 Holding Company, The Executive Office of the President of the United States, The U.S. Courts, The U.S. Treasury, General Motors, GE, Chrysler, J&J, Minnesota Power Company, Freddie Mac, Xerox Corporation, AT&T, Bank of Boston, Citibank, DEC, Rand Corporation, and others.

Published works are included in the Harvard Business Review, Management Science, the ACM Transactions on Data Base Systems, IBM’s Perspectives in Computing, Communications of the ACM, and numerous conference proceedings and internal corporate reports.
