Teaching Philosophy

As a professor in a clinical training program, my approach to classroom instruction has been to provide the foundation for clinical excellence. As a practicing medical speech-language pathologist for almost 30 years, I bring substantial clinical experience to the classroom. In all of my courses, I have invested a considerable amount of time preparing instructional materials. I emphasize a disorder-based approach and use extensive video and audiotaped cases to highlight important clinical features and symptomatology. Students see and hear numerous examples of specific disorder types. These video case illustrations serve as a springboard to discuss normal processes and the anatomical and physiological underpinnings of disordered speech and language. This ultimately leads to an exploration of assessment and management strategies.
