Research Statement

I provide research and reference help for University of Utah students and faculty, teaching library research skills for researchers in the social sciences and humanities.  My primary interests are; the changing environment of academic libraries from a leadership perspective, how libraries participate in and build communities on campus & broader contexts, and teaching information literacy on a level that fosters inquisitive motivation to see what is going on in multiple 'silos' of disciplines/knowledge other than the one you happen to find yourself in.  In addition, I am fascinated by how practical library teaching in the university environment could be applied to larger communities in the general public who are in the midst of an era of change highlighted by 'fake news', doubt in mass media integrity, and societal change in how we as individuals decide what is 'good enough' in a world of information overload.

  • Breiman, J. & Larsen, D. (2016, May 6). Special collections outreach via library instruction to first year engineering students. Presented at The Utah Library Association Annual Conference, Davis Conference Center, Layton, UT. With a goal of increasing graduation rates, a year-long freshmen cohort program was designed to foster relationships between hopeful engineering students who may not otherwise have a peer support group. After several years of poor results in student presentations, one librarian appealed for help from Special Collections and as a result, student interest & participation anecdotally improved, which merited a more formal curriculum. The collaboration between an instruction librarian and Special Collections archivists seeks to break down the traditional notion of who is a patron of Special Collections, and introduce Special Collections materials as an integral part of library research. This presentation will explore novel Special Collections outreach ideas, the need for expanding library instruction with Special Collections and primary sources, and the unexpected outcome of improved collaboration between personnel in different areas of the library. Presentation, Presented, 05/06/2016.
