Research Statement

I want art and life to connect in a meaningful way.  I want to experience that something Duchamp termed as ‘delay.’ I am searching for just the right conditions that might produce something very much like a 22° halo with a circumzenithal arc. I aspire to understand how experiences, words, and thoughts can be slowed down and refracted through drawings and prints.

Perhaps, I am creating a palimpsest of gestures and objects that were simultaneously dangerous, beautiful and brave. I reuse and alter my own archetypes, metaphors and symbols, and hope that the visible traces of these universal forms can be recognized by others. I strive for an honest introspective approach to appropriation and inventiveness in my art making. I am looking for the joyous sense of a mind that can break free of its self-restraints and criticisms.

Narrative is a driving force in my work.  Lately, I have found myself mapping the psyche and charting Psyche’s circuitous journey. I have raced toward the ocean, driven across landscapes and traversed mountain passes. I have crossed great oceans and ancient lake beds in search of myths and metaphors.

On these journeys, I have encountered individuals who have shared personal antidotes with me.   Many of their stories I have transformed into allegories for my drawings, prints, ceramics and constructions.

I want to live in the present, but also to dissolve the negative aspects of familiarity by paying close attention to my surroundings. Everything is waiting to be interpreted. I want to speak in poetic terms and be drawn into metaphors that are resistant to our current culture of speed.

Artists are changed by their creative labor and efforts.  The artist who completes their task is not the same person who envisioned the work. I am making and unmaking myself with each artifact produced and every abstraction reflected upon.

Nothing is finished. Everything is a fragment. A compass needle pointing elsewhere.
