Teaching Philosophy

I strongly believe that as a professional educator in the field of second language teaching, one of my primary responsibilities is to provide my students with as much authentic use of the target language as possible.  Another responsibility is to expose my students to the culture of the target language during classroom instruction.  I accomplish this by my choice of materials which I utilize in the classroom.  The text or texts I choose to utilize in the classroom must be compiled by a native or native–like speaker and also published in the native country of the target language.  Materials other than the text (e.g., periodicals, videos, etc.) that are used must also be native in origin.  I believe that the use of authentic materials enhances the four skills needed for language learning:  listening, reading, speaking, and writing; by giving learners the opportunity to create using the target language as it is used in the target culture. By introducing learners to the target language in such ways, I believe that students develop the motivation to learn the target language for personal, rather than for academic reasons (i.e., “fulfilling a requirement”), and will most likely improve their overall linguistic proficiency in all four skill areas.
