Research Statement

My conceptual process begins with a walk, an intimate physical, emotional experience, of seeing the site with the eyes of an artist. I then augment empirical observations with electronic/print media research, personal history, and conversations with residents. The "Tantalus" series focuses on shifting values, the interest in place itself as the subject and object to create artworks that consider public and private spaces.
My art process takes on a life of its own. My activities allow for something unanticipated to arrive, affirming my belief that art is inherently political because, for me, exciting art challenges preconceptions. I am not searching for objective truth; my sense of place is increasingly defined by the actions and reflections of the community. By seeking out multiple conversations, I embed myself within the community, sharing my voice and vision, removing notions of a position of privilege. I position myself in a place of learning and listening to those who are accessible within the community, thereby acknowledging their positions within the research.
I utilize a range of materials, processes, and methods to assist the development of this body of work that investigates people and ecosystems located near industry and waste disposal. I have found that both are adaptive and display ecological and community resilience. I conduct artistic, scholarly, and community-based approaches to address multiple questions that include: What was the historical process the government/industry used in selecting these sites initially? What is the demographic make-up of the community? What is the responsibility of the government/industry in continuous monitoring of the site? What was the space before it became a dumpsite? How many people were/are affected? How has the landscape changed, and can it recover? Will the community survive through the next generation? Has the impact on the environment altered or adapted the oral/social history of the community? What strategies is the community currently utilizing to overcome the adversities the effected environment has caused to physical and social structures?
I regard the fundamental tenant of a painting is to ask a question, and then allow the viewer the freedom to formulate an infinite number of responses. I define situations in space; they are not literal but rather intellectual concepts. The paintings reflect structural and textural metaphors; for me, the definition of space is predicated on human presence and initiative.
Formally, my material application is firmly controlled; this technique indicates a somber attempt at objectivity.
The Tantalus series focuses on shifting values, the interest in place itself as the subject and object to create artworks that consider public and private spaces.
