Research Summary

My scholarship interests are focused in the following areas: (1) legal requirements in health care, professional standards of care, and risk management; (2) ethical dilemmas in health care delivery and health care technologies; (3) communication and conflict management; (4) FDA law and regulation; and (5) intellectual property in health care.

James (Jim) Ruble, PharmD, JD is Executive Associate Dean, Professional Education and a professor (lecturer) at the University of Utah College of Pharmacy.  He is also a faculty relations specialist in the Office of Faculty and Academic Affairs for the Senior Vice President for Health Sciences.

Jim has adjunct appointments in the School of Medicine-Center for Health Ethics, Arts and Humanities, in the College of Law, and in Molecular Pharmaceutics at the University of Utah.  His teaching, scholarship and clinical activities focus on pharmacy and healthcare law, ethical dilemmas in healthcare, FDA law and regulation, health care policy, pharmacy compounding, community pharmacy practice, communication and conflict.

Jim is a member of the Utah Bar and the US Patent and Trademark Office Bar.  Jim is trained in conflict resolution, and is a mediator.  He received academic degrees in science (BS Biology), pharmacy (BS Pharmacy and PharmD), and law (JD) from the University of Utah.

Jim is a respected educator and has received many teaching awards, including the College of Pharmacy Teacher of the Year (multiple), Hinckley Institute Outstanding Professor Award and the Daniels Fund-David Eccles School of Business Award for Excellence in Ethics Education.  He served the University of Utah Hospital Ethics Committee for 10 years, and also worked as an ombudsman.  Jim chaired the Controlled Substances Advisory Committee to the Utah State Legislature for the Utah Department of Health.  Jim is on the Board of Directors for Wasatch Homeless Health Care (4th Street Clinic) in Utah.  Jim is a past-president and member of the American Society for Pharmacy Law (ASPL).

Jim feels privileged to be an educator, clinician, and scholar, but most importantly he strives to be a humanitarian and facilitate the principles of eudaimonia ('human flourishing').
