Teaching Philosophy

I believe that people learn best by doing and sharing what they have learned. As a teacher, I work with students to ensure they can meet their potential in an environment that is safe, support risk-taking, and allows for discussing and exploring ideas.  My role is to provide information for grounding the discussion and then encourage students to use that information to further their own interests in a topic area.  Working with information from real world contexts allows students to apply the information for their own practice and career contexts.

Courses I Teach

  • Honors 3950 - Voices of Muslim Women
Over the course of this semester, we will read autobiographies/memoirs of women, works of fiction, and one book of poetry from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Hearing these women’s voices will provide us with a view of current events in this region of the world. By considering how these writers portray women’s lives and the events in their countries, we will better understand the personal circumstances of these writers. We will engage in thorough discussions of these readings, and augment the texts with current films on specific issues relating to women in this region. Through these explorations in this 3-credit hour course, we will uncover the roles of women in MENA in terms of the political and social structures that directly impact their lives and those of their families. This course carries an IR and a DV designation.
  • SW 6110 - Research for Social Work Practice
This three-credit course provides MSW students with research concepts and skills to ask practice-relevant questions, to locate and critically evaluate research to answer those questions, and to plan and evaluate implementation of interventions. This course will prepare MSW-level practitioners to engage in practice-informed research and research-informed practice.
  • SW 6142 - Advanced Administration & Supervision in Health
