Biography

Julie P. Balk DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, CNE is the Executive Director of Nurse Practitioner Education and Specialty Track Director for the Family Nurse Practitioner track.  Julie is certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner through the American Nurses Credentialing Center and a certified nurse educator through the National League of Nursing. She has worked in a variety of clinical settings including family practice, internal medicine, infectious disease, endocrinology and cardiology.  She has traveled to the Amazon jungle, Solomon Islands and Africa with humanitarian medical missions.  Her current clinical practice provides onsite healthcare and wellness coaching for CHG, a national healthcare staffing agency.

Prior to coming to the University she was an Associate Professor at Westminster College where she taught in the Baccalaureate and Master nursing programs.  She has served as a consultant for Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions and Western Governors University in areas of course development, assessment, program design and curriculum review.

Julie has been very active in the nurse practitioner community serving in numerous leadership roles including President of Utah Nurse Practitioners from 2008-2010.   She has been active in promoting nurse practitioner practice including providing testimony to the Utah State Legislature regarding scope of practice issues.  In 2011 the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners awarded Julie the Excellence in Practice Award for the State of Utah.  She was Co-Chair for The Utah Medical Education Council report on Utah's Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Workforce, 2013: A Study on the Supply and Distribution of APRNs in Utah and is currently serving on the committee to update Utah's workforce information in 2016.
