Research Statement

My research has two main areas of interest, the first being the formation of fine particulate matter from combustion and gasification systems.  Fine particulate matter is formed during a high temperature process by the vaporization of fuel components and their subsequent condensation or nucleation to form particles.  In this research we are interested in the fate of various metals during the combustion of fuels, such as coal, and their partitioning between ultra-fine, fine, and coarse particle sizes.  Soot, is also a key issue in some combustion systems, such as engines.  In this case, soot is formed by gaseous precursors of hydrocarbons.  Our research is investigating the formation of soot and its structure as “young soot” and the oxidation of soot once it is formed.  Our group is also interested in ambient particle monitoring and relating the particulate matter at a location to possible sources in the area, or source attribution or apportionment.  This information is valuable for not only understanding the nature of PM in a location, but also its components for various health effects studies. I am currently on the Steering Committee for the Air Quality Program at the University of Utah.

Recently, my group has worked with the other team members at the University of Utah to help understand and develop Chemical Looping technologies.   Our group has developed a process model of the system begin to determine the necessary energy and carbon footprint of various carbon-capture techniques for coal utilization. In addition, through a partnership with cpfd, we are utilizing their software Barracuda VR to understand the hydrodynamics of the system and verify our results from the 200 kW Process Development Unit operated by Professor Kevin Whitty.
