Research Statement

Our core expertise is in the area of control of complex dynamic systems. Our current theoretical research is focused on the design of state estimation methods for stochastic systems with hybrid measurements and nonlinear state estimation. The areas of applied interests include: MRI-guided control of non-invasive thermal therapies: Our emphasis is on the design of MRI-guided control systems for noninvasive ultrasound surgery of tumors and conformal drug delivery by targeted activation of ultrasound and thermally-sensitive drug carriers. Physiologic control of ventricular assist devices: Heart failure patients may require implantable mechanical vascular assist devices (VAD). The goal is to develop adaptive control algorithms that automatically adjust VAD operation to varying physiological needs of a patient, caused by changing exercise level and clinical status of assisted heart. Sensors and methods for interfacial characterization of materials: In many applications it is desirable to monitor and characterize in real time and in situ the growth, degradation, or changes in the material properties of dielectric thin films. Our laboratory is addressing this need by developing embedded sensors for continuous measurements of electrical properties at material interfaces and methods that use this information to estimate film thickness and material properties of dynamically changing films on substrates of complex geometry.
