Research Statement

Women's health care providers are increasingly aware that environmental exposures—such as chronic stress, depression and anxiety, intimate partner violence, poverty, poor nutrition, maternal smoking, experiences of racism, and even the microbes living in and on the body - are associated with an increased incidence of poor pregnancy outcomes, such as preterm birth and low birth weight babies. It is important to increase our understanding of the pathophysiologic mechanisms involved in these associations, and to introduce safe interventions to improve the health of mothers, babies, and families.
