  • Review excerpt Sacramento Choral Arts Society Verdi Requiem: Of course, tenor Robert Breault had many opportunities to display his considerable talent. I felt that he shone in his mournful, lamenting Ingemisco solo. I also really enjoyed his work in the Domine Jesu (Offertorio) section. I was aware of his restraint when so many tenors might have been tempted to oversing in order to be heard above the other members of the quartet. 05/14/2022. https://www.perfcal.com/Orgs/SCSO/Reviews/SCSO-5-1...

He reminded me vocally, if not in stature, of a young James King, whom I heard sing this role in Munich in 1969. Othalie Graham’s Ariadne blossomed forth in response to the wooing of Bacchus; and the two lovers each declared themselves utterly transformed by the power of love – an ending seconded by Zerbinetta who gets the opera’s last word.” The Berkeley Daily Planet (MacBean), July 13, 2015 Festival Opera, Ariadne auf Naxos, Strauss. 07/13/2015. http://www.berkeleydailyplanet.com/issue/2015-07-0...

  • “The University of Utah Opera Program, directed by tenor Robert Breault, will be bringing about 25 students to Moab's Star Hall on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. to assist in a production of “Trial by Jury” for the Moab Music Festival Finale, executive director Laura Brown said. Breault's career is highlighted by more than 200 performances with orchestras such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Symphony of Taiwan, and over 80 roles in a wide array of opera companies including the New York City Opera's productions of “Carmen”, “La Traviata”, and “Semele”. Opera News spoke highly of Breault, noting he made “an excellent impression, his mellifluous tenor boasting clarity of both tone and direction; clearly reveling in high notes, he sang with notable dynamic variety.” Preceding the play in the festival's finale will be three other performances: “English Folk Songs” by Benjamin Britten, “Phantasie Trio” by Alice Verne-Bredt, and “Piano Quintet in G minor” by Arnold Bax.”. 09/03/2014. http://www.moabsunnews.com/get_out_and_go/article_...
  • The featured work, though, is Gilbert and Sullivan’s one-act operetta Trial by Jury, the duo’s first unqualified success. Performing it will be tenor Robert Breault and members of his Utah Lyric Opera Ensemble. Directing will be Julie Wright-Costa, a colleague of Breault’s at the University of Utah’s opera department. Also taking part from the U. is pianist Jeffery Price. “The piece is a lot of fun. It’s a spoof of everything,” Breault said in an interview with Reichel Recommends. The plot is simple and ludicrous as only librettist William S. Gilbert could fashion. It revolves around a case of breach of promise of marriage which, after the usual antics, is finally resolved with the judge offering to marry the wronged lady himself. “None of the characters are warm hearted people,” said Breault, who sings the role of the Defendant, “but we still love them.” This will be Breault’s first G & S role. Wright-Costa, however, has had considerable experience with the G & S repertoire through her yearly engagements at the Ohio Light Opera. “That’s why I’m excited she has accepted the job to direct,” Breault said. Festival co-founder Michael Barrett, who will conduct the performance, wants the piece sung with an English accent, Breault said, but differently than native speakers would speak. “He wants to bring out the rhyming schemes. But we have to be careful and not overdo it, otherwise the audience will miss the clever lyrics.” Besides being his first Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, this performance also marks Breault’s debut at the Moab festival. “Michael wanted me to do it and some other pieces on the program,” Breault said. “Up to now I’ve always avoided singing with the students.” But he added that it’s been a great experience for him and for the young singers. “It’s been a unifying experience for my class,” he said. 09/02/2014. http://www.reichelrecommends.com/moab-festival-to-...

  • The University of Utah’s Lyric Opera Ensemble is staging Humperdinck’s opera today and Saturday. It’s a production that captures the essence of the work and presents it in an engaging way that can captivate both young and old alike. It’s sung in English with sets and costumes by Utah Opera. Demaree Brown as Hansel and Amber Stachitus as Gretel. (Photo: Courtesy Robert Breault) Stage director Michael Scarola, who has been coming to the U. to direct opera for several years now, has done wonders with the staging. It’s a fairly tale setting that has some serious undertones, but done in such a manner as not to turn the story into something grim and sinister that would frighten young children. I attended Wednesday’s dress rehearsal with the same cast that will sing today’s performance. The leads were absolutely delightful. Demaree Brown and Amber Stachitus were charming as Hansel and Gretel, respectively. There was wonderful chemistry between them and they obviously had a blast doing these roles. Tyler Oliphant and Hayley Bell as the children’s parents were spot on in their interpretations. Both imbued their characterizations with credibility, as did Brown and Stachitus. Erin McOmber as the witch. (Photo: Courtesy Robert Breault) Erin McOmber played an eerie witch. She was ominous but not without some finely tuned humor in her characterization. Mackenzie Matthews as the Sandman and Ruth Ellis as the Dew Fairy were also wonderful in their roles. The kids of the International Children’s Choir were a delight as the witch’s captive children. And the dancers, who were the 14 angels watching over Hansel and Gretel as they slept in the forest, were a pleasure to see. The members of the Utah Philharmonia under Robert Baldwin played with finesse. This is really quite a mesmerizing — bewitching? — production that is entertaining and well worth seeing by children as well as adults. 04/18/2014. http://www.reichelrecommends.com/lyric-opera-ensem...

  • “Also, from an economic point of view, a performance of this version may simply be more practical assuming, of course, that two voices as strong as those of tenor Robert Breault and baritone Richard Zeller can be found to accompany any ensemble.
Breault is outstanding, not only in the opening lied but also in the third and fifth movements, and he and Zeller sing with impeccable diction and passionate intensity. Their performances compare favorably to other artists such as tenor René Kollo and baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who have done this work. • But opera is about the singing, and fortunately, Utah Opera has for the most part assembled a strong cast of singers. Leading off the cast is local tenor Robert Breault as Tamino. Breault has the right kind of vocal timbre and lightness to take on the part. His singing on opening night was light, lyrical and beautifully crafted and phrased. His acting is also of the caliber to bring credibility to the role. His “Dies Bildnis ist bezaubernd schön” early in Act I was one of the highlights of the evening for the expressiveness and heartfelt emotions he brought to it. • “A beautifully cast trio of singers play the central roles: Salt Lake-based tenor Robert Breault as Tamino, the noble prince; soprano Anya Matanovic as Pamina, the brave princess; and baritone Daniel Belcher as Papageno, the simple birdcatcher. All excelled in Saturday’s opening performance. Breault sang with well-focused lyricism and invested Tamino with an innocence that made his emotional journey all the more relatable.” Salt Lake Tribune. 03/17/2013. http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/mobile2/56006994-218/...
  • “A vocally and dramatically well-matched trio of principles led the cast. Tenor Robert Breault, as Tamino, was in fine voice on opening night, his clarion tenor arching in sublime phrases during “Dies Bildnis.”” Opera News . 03/16/2013. http://www.operanews.com/Opera_News_Magazine/2013/...

  • Lesenger and his very solid principals — Barbara Shirvis (Manon), Robert Breault (des Grieux), Michael Chioldi (Lescaut) and Kevin Glavin (Geronte) — understood the tragic stakes of the love story and presented it in direct, visually sensible terms….The four leads delivered enjoyable, musically impressive performances, doubtless in the process imparting lessons in professionalism to CO’s Young Artists, cast in smaller and choral roles. Shirvis, making her local debut, and longtime CO favorite Breault didn’t look like teenagers; Shirvis’s handsome face and figure and Breault’s ardor soon made anyone who was listening forget the disparity….Breault supplied ringing climaxes and — as is his wont — phrased his music insightfully and expressively. All four leads handled the English translation pretty well, with Chioldi (and Breault when not pressed) exhibiting particularly sharp diction…..Clearly moved, the audience applauded demonstratively. • “The work itself is worth the trip to Norton Hall. The four leading roles are all in the hands of serious American professionals who — even if not all ideally cast in some aspects of the score — deliver enjoyable and musically impressive performances, doubtless in the process imparting lessons to the company’s Young Artists appearing in smaller and choral roles….The singers, and conductor James Meena, all come from the highest echelons of North America regional opera….and in all cases have virtues and strengths that deserve wider career profiles…The leads do not look like the teenagers they’re portraying. If they were teenagers, they wouldn’t make it through Act 1. Shirvis’ handsome figure and Breault’s ardor soon make anyone listening to the music forget the disparity….Breault can supply ringing climaxes, and much of his phrasing is insightful and expressive…Chautauqua audience seemed to react just like those I saw in Freiburg, Germany, and Philadelphia: amused but a little puzzled after Act I; happy enough after Act 2 with its great, wrenching love duet; offering a huge ovation after the truly great ensemble scene and Des Grieux’s impassioned plea to join Manon (Breault really pulls out the stops here) that ends Act 3; and in tears for Act 4 (Shirvis acts and phrases the tricky “Sola, perduta abbandonata” with great skill). Chautauqua Opera’s leads offer a level of commitment and professional savoir-faire that you might not be privileged to see soon on many of the world’s “great” opera stages. And Puccini’s first masterpiece still packs a punch.” Chautauquan Daily (Shengold) “Impressive leads make ‘Manon Lescaut’ highly worthwhile.”, July 30 2012 Chautauqua Opera, Manon Lescaut, Puccini. 07/30/2012. http://chqdaily.com/2012/07/30/impressive-leads-ma...
  • “Tenor Robert Breault has come to be known at Chautauqua for a sweet and expressive voice, capable of swelling to enormous power, and his performance as des Grieux, Manon's young lover, was certainly no exception.” Jamestown Post-Journal “Chautauqua Opera Performs ‘Manon Lescaut’”, July 26, 2012 Chautauqua Opera, Manon Lescaut, Puccini. 07/26/2012. http://www.post-journal.com/page/content.detail/id...
  • “The three soloists were exemplary, all projecting fine tonal focus and clean articulation. But more than that, in both solos and ensembles they had the colloquial delivery of the natural storyteller and always placed themselves at the service of the music…Tenor Robert Breault as the angel Uriel sang many of the connecting recitatives and arias with commanding declamation that managed to retain an engagingly committed narrative projection.” Buffalo News (Trotter) “A masterpiece, handled masterfully”, April 1, 2012 Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, The Creation, Haydn. 04/01/2012. http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P2-31057964.html
  • “The entrance of tenor Robert Breault, who performed Verdi's Requiem at Knowles Chapel last year, was a breath of fresh air for the music. His antiphonal sequence with the choir during 'The Agony in the Garden' was arresting, followed by a beautiful aria.” Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra Examiner (Meneses) “The Glory of Bach St. Matthew Passion” March 5, 2012 Florida Bach Festival, St. Matthew Passion, Bach. 03/05/2012.
  • “Of the soloists, tenor Robert Breault gave the most polished performance; his laser-focused pianissimos were most impressive, and his use of ornamentation was always tasteful.” Salt Lake Tribune (Reese Newton) “Utah Voices sings ‘Messiah’ with spirit conviction” December 13, 2011 Utah Voices, Messiah, Handel. 12/13/2011. http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/entertainment/5310337...
  • “The ardent vocal quartet was grounded in Richard Zellner’s stentorian baritone and capped by Heidi Grant Murphy’s gleaming soprano. Mezzo Suzanne Mentzer and tenor Robert Breault, who was the incisive tenor soloist in the Symphony’s 2009 performance of the Ninth, matched the strength if not the bright colors of the outer voices.” SanDiego.com (Herman) “John Nelson Conducts Beethoven's Ninth with Symphony An exuberant, compelling account” December 12, 2011 San Diego Symphony, Ninth Symphony, Beethoven. 12/12/2011. http://local.sandiego.com/arts/john-nelson-conduct...
  • “When Bass Richard Zeller opened the vocal section, his voice filled the hall. Symphony Hall is a tough venue for soloists but this quartet marshaled their voices and "painted the back wall". Robert Breault handled the impossible tenor solo as well as could ever be expected. It is a brutal piece of music to sing.” San Diego Reader (Harris) December 12, 2011 San Diego Symphony, Ninth Symphony, Beethoven. 12/12/2011. http://www.virtualonlineeditions.com/publication/?...
  • Tenor Robert Breault, with Jeffrey Price at the piano, brought his usual professionalism to the song “Adelaide” and the song cycle “An die ferne Geliebte (To the Immortal Beloved).” The latter set of songs, addressed to the mysterious woman Beethoven considered the love of his life, poignantly balances longing and resignation — and the sensitively phrased performance by Breault and Price delivered both these qualities. Salt Lake Tribune (Reese Newton) November 13, 2011 Nova Concert Series, Salt Lake City, Adelaide and An die ferne Geliebte, Beethoven. 11/13/2011. http://www.sltrib.com/csp/cms/sites/sltrib/pages/p...
  • Adelaide is a wonderfully lyrical piece, and Breault captured the character of the music in his nuanced account. His singing was expressive and fluid. The same was also true for An die ferne Geliebte. The yearning and tenderness expressed in the words and music was brought to the fore in Breault’s treatment. His singing was beautifully phrased and delivered, and both he and Price brought out the nuances of the music in their perceptive and thoughtful collaborative interpretation. Reichel Recommends (Reichel) November 13, 2011 Nova Concert Series, Salt Lake City, Adelaide and An die ferne Geliebte, Beethoven. 11/13/2011. http://www.reichelrecommends.com/?p=1815
  • “The soloists were superb. Tenor Robert Breault got the first spotlight and delivered a warm interpretation throughout, with a warm and sweet tone which was absolutely pleasing.” Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra Examiner (Meneses) October 24, 2011 Florida Bach Festival, Requiem, Verdi. 10/24/2011.
  • “The well-blended soloists, Dominique Labelle, Jamie Barton, Bruce Sledge, Robert Breault and Evan Hughes, although used sparingly, did everything Schubert and Ling asked.” San Diego Union Tribune (Chute) “San Diego Master Chorale delivers slice of heaven” February 12, 2011 San Diego Symphony, Mass in Eb, Schubert. 02/12/2011. https://www.utsandiego.com/news/2011/feb/12/san-di...
  • “Tenor Robert Breault made his EO (Edmonton Opera) debut with distinction as the Duke of Mantua. He looks the part of a man who can seduce women with more than just his power and wealth, and he has a lustrous voice. I hope the company puts him at the top of the list for future ventures calling for an excellent voice with an attractive masculine presence.” Opera Canada (Rankin) January, 2010 Edmonton Opera, Rigoletto, Verdi. 01/01/2010.
