Presentations

  • MIGUEL BASIM CHUAQUI (2022) Autenticidad y Apropriación en la Composición Musical (Authenticity and Appropriation in Music Composition). A presentation at the Universidad Católica de Chile (Catholic University of Chile) on my music and the concept of the musical identity of the composer, with additional examples from the music of Stravinsky. Being Chilean and American, I have had to face expectations of the public and my colleagues about my musical identity: the expectation that there are "Chilean" or "North American" elements in my music. In addition, the focus of various musicologists on the appropriation of folk musical languages and minority groups (such as the language of Afro-American influenced music, within the United States), has forced me to define my position regarding the question of possible cultural appropriations of U.S. and Chilean sources in my music. Invited Talk/Keynote, Presented, 11/10/2022.
