Internal Service

  • Co-initiated with Dr. Robert Kraemer a process for Speech-Language Pathologist students in the College of Health to receive coursework in reading intervention with College of Education students. Co-Collaborator, 08/01/2018 - 02/28/2022. University service.
  • I collaborate year-long with members of the Ed Psych Department at the COE regarding its Master's in Reading program and the USBE Reading Interventionist Endorsement. collaborator, 01/04/2018 - 12/31/2022. College service.

  • Collaborated with Hinckley Institute of Politics and Department of Political Science to propose a global internship for U of U students in Botswana. PI, 08/26/2015 - present. University service.
  • In 2014, I was approached by the U of U Bennion Center regarding the possibility of training and support for undergraduate U of U Work Study students assigned to tutor struggling readers in Salt Lake City School District elementary schools. Since then, UURC staff have provided extensive training to these students every semester. I also served on a search committee to hire the current director on this Bennion project.   • I teach the practicum component of ED PSY 6631: Assessment & Instructional Strategies for Reading Difficulties. I also assign a UURC staff member to assist with this practicum. The UURC is not reimbursed for our time. clinician, 08/20/2012 - present. College service.

Community Partnership

  • I have made many of the UURC's forms and charts available to Weber State University for its Montessori curriculum after Jodi Smith, a RTI Specialist and WSU grad student reaching out to me. 07/02/2018 - 12/31/2019
  • Park City Dyslexia Advocates, a parent group, asked me to present at their monthly meeting on Feb 14, 2017. That presentation led to a role for me in negotiating between the parents and the school district regarding intervention services for dyslexic students. That role continues... 02/14/2017 - 12/20/2017
  • In 2014, I was approached by the Utah State Office of Education to develop reading assessment and intervention services for Juvenile Justice sites along the Wasatch Front. Currently, we coordinate and provide training for volunteer efforts at 5 JJS sites. 07/01/2014 - present
  • Invited by the Utah State Office of Education to assist in the development of a Reading Interventionist Endorsement at the state level. Activities included a primary role in developing academic and clinical practica content for all aspects. 04/29/2014 - present
  • The UURC continues its work at 5 Youth-in-Custody sites (Ogden-Millcreek, Davis-Farmington Bay, Granite-Wasatch & Decker Lake, and Provo-Slate Canyon). We train volunteers to tutor struggling readers and conduct Literature Circles. These efforts are likely to expand in the coming year, due to the excellent response our work has engendered. I handle all of the negotiations, budgets and planning for this effort. 01/01/2014 - 12/31/2020
  • Collaborated with Utah State Office of Education to produce and implement a complete Word Study strand for the STAR volunteer tutoring program which serves 8,000 struggling Utah school children. 03/2013 - 07/30/2015
  • Dr. Sharlene Kiuhara and I developed a partnership between the UURC the and Westminster Education Department. Westminster students are strongly encouraged to complete a clinical practicum with the UURC during summer semester. To date, approximately 100 Westminster students have done so, and I work closely with Dr. Lowell Oswald at Westminster. 02/15/2012 - 12/31/2020

Outreach

  • Dr. Phyllis Robertson, a professor in the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M asked to tour the UURC and meet with me in preparation for an article she is writing about university reading clinics. She spent 2 days with me observing and asking questions. 06/12/2019 - 06/14/2019
  • I was contacted by Aaron Wilson, principal at Granite Park Junior High to do a podcast for parents on the importance of reading aloud to young children. 06/05/2019 - 07/26/2019
  • Ongoing consultation with Decoding Dyslexia, a parent advocacy group with children who struggle with severe reading difficulties. The current FAR period found me presenting a keynote speech at their annual conference (Wasatch Reading Summit) and working with them to sponsor an informational document for parents. 01/04/2018 - 12/31/2020
  • Along with staff members from the UURC, I spent several days in rural Utah (specifically, Kane and Carbon counties), conducting assessments of struggling readers and professional development. This outreach ties into our distance pilot. 08/09/2017 - 12/21/2017

  • I provide consultation and support to dozens of parents of struggling readers all year. Activities include answering in-person, email and telephone inquiries from parents about their children's difficulties and possibilities for remediation. 07/01/2012 - 12/20/2018

Honors & Awards

  • The University of Utah Reading Clinic in the College of Education, The Hinckley Institute, and the University of Utah Political Science Department, in collaboration with Stepping Stones International, a non-governmental, non-profit organization based in Mochudi, Botswana, received $10,000 to broaden sustainable, global learning experiences for University of Utah student interns. Interns will tutor vulnerable Batswana youth, train and mentor local teachers to execute high-quality literacy practices, and build community infrastructure.
