My scholarship is located within a community-based participatory action framework that has at its center the critical examination of power and access structures that often disregard underrepresented and oppressed populations. Furthermore, participatory frameworks value multiple forms of knowledge and respect groups that often are excluded from access points and who hold unique perspectives on structural barriers. My own journey as a scholar has increasingly moved me from community-based research to participatory models and further to community-led projects, where community partners are peers in the co-creation of knowledge. This asset-based approach to community development focuses on existing strengths as well as placing the highest priority on solutions developed by the community itself.
One of my recognized strengths is my ability to bring together faculty, students, and partners from institutions of higher education with community organizations and residents groups. Together we identify shared goals and implement well-defined partnerships that create the context for new models of engaged teaching, community-based research (CBR, CBPR & PAR), and social action.
