Courses I Teach

  • ATMOS 3100 - Intro to Atmospheric Chemistry & Air Pollution
    Chemical reactions that take place in the atmosphere determine the severity of two of the most challenging modern environmental crises: air pollution and climate change. To develop practical solutions to these global challenges, the discipline of Atmospheric Chemistry, seeks to provide fundamental scientific insights on the how the chemical composition of the atmosphere will change in response to different stressors (e.g., How will air pollution change in a warmer climate, under different emission scenarios, during different seasons, or on another planet?). This course is intended as an introductory course for majors and non-major undergraduates interested in learning how fundamental physical processes impact air quality. At its core, this course focuses on teaching the applied chemistry, thermodynamics, and physics that control the concentrations of gases and particles in the atmosphere, how scientists predict changes in those concentrations to different stressors, and how these changes impact climate and air pollution. We will also explore how topics learned in the course informed the policy and engineering solutions to past environmental problems, like acid rain and the ozone hole, and as well as how it informs potential solutions to current environmental challenges, with special attention given to how regulators and scientists are currently tackling the problem of poor air quality in Salt Lake City. Beyond the core topics taught in this course, students will also be given the chance to practice and develop various personal skills that are designed to authentically mimic those required in different professional settings. In this course, you will be challenged to skim and synthesize current scientific literature, to communicate complex topics in plain language, and to work collaboratively and accountably in groups.
