Teaching Philosophy

My approach to teaching reflects and complements my community-engaged research that I conduct in that I engage my students in real-world situations that require critical thinking and communicating with a diversity of voices through a collaborative and experiential learning experience.  As an individual who now teaches in the College of Humanities at the University of Utah, Department of Communication and most recently at a Medical Center in the Midwest for 10 years, I employed the process of teaching where I facilitate a community of learners and engage students in service-centered experiences.  I have taught a diversity of students and feel that this has broadened my scope and reach as a teacher.  The following describes in detail the students I have taught over the course of two decades.

Courses I Teach

  • COMM 5580 - Public Relations Cases and Campaigns
PR campaigns play a critical role in the success of an organization; however, not all campaigns have been strategically designed and executed. In this course, you will learn to recognize what makes campaigns successful, review PR Campaigns from both a theoretical and contextual perspective, and research and plan your own PR Campaign for a non-profit organization. Students will also evaluate various PR cases and participate in an in-class debate to prepare for the final group client presentation.
  • COMM 7290 - Health Communication & Community Engagement
This course is designed to enhance students’ understanding of Health Communication and Community Engagement Theory, Methods and Practice and implications on the Health Communication profession and also Health Communication scholarship.
  • PBHLT 6240 - Health Communication
This Health Communication (graduate) course is focused on health education, health promotion, and practice with an emphasis on planning, design, and evaluation of health communication programs and interventions for populations with shared risks, exposures or behaviors. Health communication theories and principles will be applied to select appropriate communication strategies and used as a guide for critical analysis of health communication plans, campaigns and interventions. Students will participate in seminar-style discussions, write reflections on health communication scholarship and develop a comprehensive public health communication product that incorporates health communication theory, principles and the role of culture.
