He has a Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences from Columbia University. He specializes in fluid-rock interactions. He has worked with high-temperature and low-temperature serpentinization utilizing a combination of fieldwork, state-of-the-art analytical techniques, and thermodynamic modelling. De Obeso’s work expands to mafic systems characterizing reaction kinetics. He is a member of the Oman Drilling Project Science Party. The project successfully drilled and characterized an active serpentinization site in the Samail ophiolite, in the Sultanate of Oman. His research program also includes the study of active serpentinization sites in Mexico and the United States. He was recently named a 2023 Mineralogical Society of America Distinguished Lecturer.
