Career Highlights

In 2009, Amanda received her Bachelor of Science, Nursing degree from the University of Utah College of Nursing.  She began her nursing career as a medical/surgical nurse for the University of Utah and St. Mark's Hospitals in Salt Lake City Utah.  In 2002, she changed course and moved to Intermountain Health Care to work in the Women's Center located within Alta View Hospital in Sandy, Utah.  There, she specialized in labor and delivery, postpartum and newborn nursing and developed a passion for women’s healthcare.

Throughout her undergraduate nursing career, Amanda had a determination to return to graduate school someday and study to be a nurse practitioner.  That dream became realty in 2003 as she was accepted to the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Master’s Degree program at the University of Utah College of Nursing.  As a student in the WHNP program she refined her physical assessment skills, studied content required for WHNP certification and completed clinical hours.  Clinical experiences during the program included midwifery and physician based OBGYN care, Veterans Administration women’s health, family planning, student health and primary care.

In 2005, Amanda graduated from the Women's Health Nurse Practitioner program at the University of Utah.  Her master's project focused on the prevention of drug facilitated sexual assault.  As partial fulfillment of the master’s project, Amanda completed the 40-hour long training program for the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE).  This training led to a position with the Salt Lake Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners and past certification as an Adult Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE-A).  Amanda worked as a SANE nurse for five years and continues to consult with team members as a women’s health expert as well providing occasional team training in related content areas.

In 2005, Amanda began her career teaching for the University of Utah College of Nursing as a maternity nursing clinical instructor.  For five years, she oversaw groups of bachelors prepared nursing students in the hospital and lab settings until transitioning into the teaching with the Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (PCNP) Program. As faculty with the PCNP program she is responsible for conducting clinical student site visits, lab instruction for physical assessment and student observation and advising.

Concurrent with teaching at the University of Utah, Amanda practiced part time as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner at Planned Parenthood Association of Utah.  Her practice with Planned Parenthood has now been integrated into a contracted position with the University of Utah College of Nursing.  Amanda serves as a clinical preceptor to Women’s Health and Primary Care NP students from the University of Utah.

In 2007, Amanda had the opportunity to continue her graduate education at the University of Utah and completed her Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree in May of 2009.  Her doctoral project involved improving nutrition curriculum in Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Midwifery programs through the creation of an online nutrition module. This module is used by the PCNP program at the University of Utah and is available as an online course for anyone who desires to take it.

In 2015, Amanda completed the Post-graduate FNP program at the University of Utah.  She is dual certified as a Family and Women's Health Nurse Practitoner.

In addition to teaching for the University of Utah College of Nursing Amanda currently practices as a NP on the OB Emergency Services/Labor and Delivery unit at the University of Utah Hospital.  She participates in active quality improvement processess aimed at improving the tie between clinic based care, patient education and the acute based visits at emergency/acute care clinics for pregnant patients.

Amanda is a current member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Sigma Theta Tau International, and Utah Nurse Practitioners (UNP).  Amanda currently serves as the membership and communications chair for UNP as well as chair for the annual Pharmacology Conference for nurse practitioners.   Amanda is a past member of the board of directors for Repertory Dance Theater in Salt Lake City, Utah.
