  • BIG AND BOLD DESCRIBES MONDAY’S INTERMEZZO CONCERT Posted on July 29, 2014 by Edward Reichel INTERMEZZO CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES, Vieve Gore Concert Hall, July 28 The theme was big and bold at Monday’s Intermezzo Chamber Music Series concert. Three works were on the program that put the technical skills of the Utah Symphony’s two percussionists, Eric Hopkins and Keith Carrick, to the test — as well as the keyboard prowess of three of Salt Lake City’s preeminent pianists, Vedrana Subotic, Kimi Kawashima and Karlyn Bond. All five gave tour de force performances. Subotic and Kawashima, along with the two percussionists, mesmerized the large audience in Vieve Gore Concert Hall with a stellar reading of Béla Bartók’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion. One of the composer’s most significant works, the sonata is a virtuosic piece for the four players. It’s effect lies in part in the intricate interplay among the four musicians, and this quartet of players were absolutely intuitive as collaborators. The two pianists played with an intensity that captured the relentless drive of the music. That was mirrored in Hopkins and Carrick’s playing as well. All four underscored the energy of the work with their robust playing, while in the Lento movement they captured the mysterious otherworldliness that Bartók so deftly created. For the final work, Nicolai Kapustin’s Concerto for Two Pianos and Percussion, Subotic teamed up with Bond, while Carrick played a trap set, leaving the array of percussion instruments in Hopkins’ hands. Kapustin’s concerto is a whirlwind of jazz idioms and virtuosic writing for all four players. It’s an overwhelming piece that demands players of the highest technical and musical talent— and these four certainly delivered. It was another stunning performance of a work that is relentless in its high octane energy and rhythmic vitality. 07/29/2014.
  • REVIEW: INTERMEZZO TAKES CHAMBER MUSIC IN A WILD, SOMETIMES WEIRD DIRECTION By Catherine Reese Newton | The Salt Lake Tribune First Published Jul 28 2014 10:36 pm Last Updated Jul 28 2014 11:11 pm "No Brahms tonight?" a patron at Monday night’s Intermezzo Chamber Music Series concert said jokingly to his neighbors at intermission. Indeed, this concert was worlds away from the melodic Romanticism of Brahms. It was loud and intense — and an excellent illustration of how wide-ranging the genre of chamber music can be. First up was Iannis Xenakis’ "Kassandra," a music drama in which a single singer portrays the Greek prophetess and the chorus of elders who refuse to believe her warnings. Tenor Brian Stucki gave a stunning performance. In something of a role reversal, Eric Hopkins’ vibrant playing on a variety of percussion instruments served to keep the music tonally grounded. Hopkins was joined by his Utah Symphony colleague Keith Carrick, plus pianists Vedrana Subotic and Kimi Kawashima, in Béla Bartók’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion. The stage setup had the effect of pitting the percussionists against the pianists, who sat facing them with backs to the audience; Bartók seemed to give the pianos the upper hand, and the fierce performances of Subotic and Kawashima would have left lesser percussionists than Carrick and Hopkins in the dust. Carrick, Hopkins and Subotic returned after intermission with pianist Karlyn Bond to play Nikolai Kapustin’s Concerto for Two Pianos and Percussion, a heavily jazz-influenced work that had Carrick stationed at a standard kit in the middle of the stage while Hopkins dashed all over the back of the stage playing a wide range of instruments. In the meantime, Bond and Subotic showed off their impressive jazz chops. 07/28/2014.
  • INTERMEZZO BEGINS 13TH SEASON MONDAY Posted on June 26, 2014 by Edward Reichel When Vedrana Subotic and David Porter started the Intermezzo Chamber Music Series, one of their goals was to present programs offering audiences their favorites while exposing them to newer and, occasionally, neglected works. And that formula has worked quite well. Thirteen years later Intermezzo is a viable and vibrant part of the Salt Lake music scene with a loyal following. “We’ve always tried to strike a balance between a lot of favorites that everyone wants to hear and new works. And we’ve stayed true to our intent over the years,” said Subotic, a pianist and the series music director. And she promised that this summer’s edition of the popular series will be no different. Intermezzo opens its five-concert series on June 30 with a more traditional program, although it does contain a work by a composer who doesn’t receive the due he deserves: Josef Suk’s Piano Trio in C minor. Suk, Antonin Dvorák’s son-in-law, wrote in a wonderfully romantic, although more Germanic, style than did Dvorák. And the piece blends in well with the remaining program, which includes Robert Schumann’s Violin Sonata in A minor, op. 105, a late work, and Dvorák’s Piano Quartet No. 2 in E flat major. Paired with the Strauss sonata on Aug. 11 is Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio in A minor. The Strauss isn’t performed very often, unlike the Tchaikovsky, which is a standard in the piano trio repertoire. “The Tchaikovsky is a well known and well loved work,” Subotic said. The July 28 concert will offer two Utah premieres: Nikolai Kapustin’s Concerto for Two Pianos and Percussion and Iannis Xenakis’ Kassandra. Rounding out the concert is Bartók’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion. Finally, the Aug. 4 concert will focus on music for woodwinds, with works by Ibert, Prokofiev, Kurtág and Mozart. 06/26/2014. http://www.reichelrecommends.com/intermezzo-begins...
  • NUANCED PLAYING ENHANCES EXPERIENCE OF EARLY BEETHOVEN Posted on April 29, 2014 by Edward Reichel “BEETHOVEN SONATA PERSPECTIVES,” Libby Gardner Concert Hall, April 28 Pianist Vedrana Subotic’s game plan in her multi-year perusal of Beethoven’s chamber music with piano alternates programs of early and late works. Monday’s concert, in which she was joined by Utah Symphony colleagues Stephen Proser, horn, Pegsoon Whang, cello, and Lun Jiang, violin, focused on sonatas written around 1800. The four works — the Horn Sonata in F major, op. 17; the Cello Sonata in F major, op. 5, no. 1; and the first two violin sonatas of the op. 12 set — show Beethoven’s considerable melodic bent. These are all lyrical, mellifluous works that are appealing and entertaining, and it’s easy to understand why he quickly became the darling of Viennese society not long after moving there. Subotic and her partners gave wonderfully nuanced and expressive accounts of these four pieces. Subotic is a fabulous pianist in her own right and a remarkable collaborator — traits that aren’t necessarily found in the same person. She brought subtle inflection to her part and made sure there was a fine balance between the piano and the other instruments, even the horn, which can be a rather dominating instrument without trying. Proser, too, must be lauded for his articulate and fluid playing. He brought lightness and dexterity to his part, even in the more forceful fanfare passages. The five cello sonatas Beethoven wrote, and which span most of his life, are gems of the repertoire. Even the two in the op. 5 set are remarkable pieces, and Whang infused her playing with fluidity and grace. It was a thoughtful account that captured the expressiveness of the music wonderfully. Jiang also gave an eloquent reading of the two violin sonatas. Both are bright, airy works and he underscored this with his sensitive playing that was light and lyrical, yet also decisive. 04/28/2014. http://www.reichelrecommends.com/nuanced-playing-e...
  • Concert preview PIANIST EMBARKS ON MULTI-YEAR BEETHOVEN PROJECT Posted on April 16, 2014 by Edward Reichel Vedrana Subotic has long been intrigued by the instrumental sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven. Already as a teen she was interested in the sonata form and how it changed and developed, especially in Beethoven’s hands. “It was as a teenager that I was first able to comprehend the form and how it evolved,” she said in an interview with Reichel Recommends. And this fascination is a major incentive behind her decision to perform all of Beethoven’s piano sonatas, as well as his other instrumental sonatas and piano trios. It’s a multi-year project that the pianist and University of Utah faculty member is eager to finally undertake. “I’m very excited about dedicating the next few years of my life to learning and performing this extraordinary repertoire.” For the first concert in the series last month she programmed Beethoven’s first published work, the three piano trios of op. 1. Her second concert, which takes place on Easter Sunday, is devoted to the composer’s final three piano sonatas: no. 30 in E major, op. 109; no. 31 in A flat major, op. 110; and no. 32 in C minor, op. 111. “These are mind boggling works. I see each of these as a small universe in itself. Her next concert, and the last one for this season, is on April 28 and gives the audience a broad overview of some of Beethoven’s early works: the Cello Sonata in F major, op. 5; the Horn Sonata in F major, op. 17; and two of the three violin sonatas in the op. 12 set. With these two concerts, Subotic will have played 10 of the 56 chamber works Beethoven wrote for piano or with the piano as an integral component. These include the sonatas for solo piano, as well as the sonatas for various instruments and piano, and the piano trios. “Only 46 more to go,” she said with a laugh. 04/16/2014. http://www.reichelrecommends.com/vedrana-subotics-...

  • Reichel Recommends INTERMEZZO SERIES ENDS WITH MEMORABLE ALL-RUSSIAN PROGRAM Posted on August 14, 2012 by Matt Dixon The 2012 Intermezzo Chamber Music Series concluded Monday with a concert of duets by the Russian composers Alfred Schnittke, Sergei Prokofiev and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Set in the lovely Vieve Gore Concert Hall on the campus of Westminster College, the concert provided an immensely satisfying conclusion to the series. (Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 1 for Violin and Piano, op. 80). Pianist Vedrana Subotic’s supple, flowing sound created just the right mood and provided a warm and intricate foundation for Jiang’s well executed melodies. While the fast sections tended to add some energy, the serious mood of the music was never abandoned. Due to the incredible depth of the composition and the brilliance of the performances, this work was the highlight of the evening. (Rachmaninoff’s Suite No. 1 for Two Pianos). Completed when the composer was only 20 years old, the work already contained the composer’s unique personal voice. The suite contains four movements, all of which showcased a lush romantic style. The third movement was particularly enjoyable, and the energetic fourth provided a rousing finish. Pianists Subotic and Karlyn Bond executed each movement with admirable technique and exuberance, while fully realizing Rachmaninoff’s signature style. While each of the musicians offered commendable performances, a special mention of Subotic should be made. While being the only performer to participate in both of the evening’s major works, Subotic never faltered. She always provided a piano sound with remarkable depth, clarity, and beauty. Her performance in the Prokofiev, especially, is one I won’t soon forget. Sincere congratulations to her, along with all of the other performers. 08/14/2012.
  • MEMORABLE EVENING OF CHAMBER MUSIC COURTESY OF INTERMEZZO Posted on July 17, 2012 by Edward Reichel INTERMEZZO CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES, Vieve Gore Concert Hall, Westminster College, July 16 (Franz Liszt: Sonata in B minor) The sonata was the opening work at Monday’s Intermezzo Chamber Music Series concert, played with incomparable musicality by series artistic director Vedrana Subotic. She gave a wonderfully nuanced account that was transparent, articulate and cleanly defined. Too often pianists are dazzled by the virtuosity of the piece. That wasn’t the case with Subotic. Her finely crafted playing allowed the bravura writing to flow out of the musical fabric and not be something superimposed on the music. It was an organic, subtle and perceptive interpretation that easily captured the expressiveness of the music. (Steve Roens; Intrados) Subotic gave a beautifully honed account that captured the brief work’s subtleties in dynamics and tempos. Her playing was wonderfully musical, transparent and fluid. Her phrasings were clearly defined and well articulated and her interpretation nuanced. The concert closed with Franz Schubert’s magnificent Piano Trio in E flat, D. 929. A late work written not too long before Schubert’s death the E flat Trio is one of his major chamber works and on the same high creative level as his string quartets and string quintet. The work was played by two of the Utah Symphony’s new members, principal second violin Claude Halter and cellist (and Halter’s wife) Anne Lee. Subotic was once again at the piano. Displaying remarkable ensemble playing, the three gave a radiant account that emphasized the classical lyricism and romantic sensibilities of the trio. They brought out the subtle shadings in the work’s harmonies and the nuances in its dynamics. Their playing was richly textured and gorgeously expressive and captured the essence of what makes Schubert’s music so compelling. 07/17/2012.
  • The listeners spoke, and Intermezzo listened BY CATHERINE REESE NEWTON THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE PUBLISHED JULY 10, 2012 10:53 AM "The 10th season is a big deal to us, and David and I thought we should do something special to involve our audiences," said Subotic, a pianist and the series' music director. Intermezzo has enjoyed a loyal core audience over the years, she said. Subotic will play on two concerts. She and Karlyn Bond will close the season with an encore performance of Rachmaninoff's Suite No. 1 for two pianos, which they played together in the early days of Intermezzo. Subotic also will play Liszt's B Minor Sonata, rescheduled from an earlier season. But she's especially enthusiastic about giving the concert premiere of "Intrados," a short piano piece by Utah composer Steve Roens, on July 16. Another central part of Intermezzo's mission is spotlighting local musicians — particularly new members of the Utah Symphony. Half a dozen orchestra newcomers will be featured this summer, including principal second violinist Claude Halter and his fiancée, cellist Anne Lee, who will play Schubert's Piano Trio No. 2 with Subotic. A relative newcomer, associate conductor Vladimir Kulenovic, will conduct Copland's "Appalachian Spring" suite in its original 13-piece instrumentation. Regular concertgoer Crystal Young-Otterstrom said Intermezzo fills an important niche on the Salt Lake concert scene. The area's other chamber series take the summer off, and the Utah Symphony's Deer Valley Music Festival has gravitated more toward popular music in recent years. "I really welcome the level of playing Intermezzo represents," Young-Otterstrom said. "The orchestra musicians bring their own artistry and are really wonderful at what they do, and it's always interesting programming." . 07/10/2012.
